Auto Levels & Theodolite

What is an Auto Level?

An Auto Level is a levelling instrument that is used to measure the elevation and the variations in the heights of different points of land in a horizontal plane. An Auto Level is the most preferred levelling instrument that is used by construction engineers these days. These measurements made by an auto level are very critical for any structure to be stable for a long period. If levelling is not done accurately, there will be irregularities in the vertical structure of the building.

The Auto Level provides precise and accurate measurements when compared to other levelling equipment. The measurements are consistent and repeated readings are unnecessary. Setting up an Auto Level is a very easy process and the operating procedure of an auto level is very simple. Auto Level is a very robust instrument that operates in any climatic conditions and can sustain even in a shaggy environment. This feature of an Auto Level makes it suitable as the construction site can be rough and coarse. The Auto Level uses hi-tech features that save a lot of time and human energy. The readings are digital and there is very little room for errors.

Parts of an Auto Level

An Auto Level consists of many parts that have unique functions of their own. An Auto Level mainly consists of a tripod, a circular spirit level and a telescope.

The Auto Level is a levelling instrument that is mounted on a tripod and secured with the help of screws. The legs of the tripod are adjusted to acquire the desired height. The levelling head of the Auto Level consists of the following parts.

  • The Trivet – the foot of the head attached to the tripod.
  • Levelling Screws – to secure the head on the tripod.
  • Object Focusing Screw – used to adjust the focus on the points.
  • Circular Bubble or Spirit Level – provides the accurate line of sight or the point of collimation of the telescope.
  • Horizontal Circle – provides scope for precise measurement
  • Gunsight – the top of the Telescope that can be rotated manually as required.
  • Object Lens – Serves as the eyepiece.
  • Tangent Screws – A screw on each side for perfect alignment of the telescope.
  • Telescope – For focusing the points and determining the heights.

Working of an Auto Level

The Auto Level is mounted on the tripod and secured using the screws provided at the base of the level. A staff called the stadia is placed at the desired location. The bubble in the bubble level is positioned to its centre by making adjustments in the position of the telescope. The exact point of reference is located through the crosshairs in the eyepiece of the telescope. Now the readings are recorded.

Auto Level and Theodolite

To acquire the right elevation measurements and the appropriate angle measurements, one has to use both the Auto Level and the Theodolite. The Theodolite provides accurate measurements of the horizontal and vertical angles between any two points. The Auto Level can not provide the angles but can provide the heights of the marked points on a horizontal plane that help decide the elevation accurately. These two instruments go hand-in-hand and are a must in an engineer’s levelling toolkit.

What Is A Theodolite?

A Theodolite is an optical device used to measure the vertical and horizontal angles between any two points accurately. Theodolites are very useful in levelling. A Theodolite is used to get the angles between various points on land before doing the actual land levelling. A Theodolite has the ability to rotate on both the horizontal and vertical axes. Most of the levelling instruments are not designed to acquire the angles and even if they do, the accuracy of the angles is compromised. Thus, to obtain accurate measurements of angles between any two given points, a Theodolite is required. Digital Theodolites are the ones used commonly. A Digital Theodolite consists of a telescope and an electronic screen to display the measured angles (vertical or horizontal).

Parts of a Theodolite

A Theodolite mainly consists of the following parts:

  • A Telescope

The telescope is constructed with mirrors on the inside. The telescope has an eyepiece and an objective lens that help to sight a target point.

  • An Operating Knob

This knob helps the user to adjust the focus on the target and make it clearer.

  • Display

It is an electronic screen that displays the measured angles.

  • A Tripod

The telescope is mounted on this tripod and the height of the instrument can be adjusted according to the user’s needs.

  • A Bubble Level

The bubble level or the spirit level helps to identify the angles to be measured.

Working of a Theodolite

The Theodolite’s functions are similar to other levelling instruments. The Theodolite is mounted on the tripod by screwing the threaded base to the tripod. Hence we can record the height of the instrument. Now, this will be used as a reference for all other kinds of measurements. The target images or objects are visualized through the eyepiece and are precisely focused using the object lens and the operating knob. The angles are displayed on the electronic screen.

What Is Levelling?

Levelling is an important process done as a part of land surveying. Levelling involves obtaining the elevation from each of the given points of land. In levelling, there will be certain points for which elevation is known already. The elevation from the unknown points is determined using these as references. The ground is levelled and made even for construction.

Levelling & It’s Importance

If levelling is not done properly, the construction of the structure might not be of even height, which means that the building might not be of the same vertical height. Because of improper levelling, there can be minute differences in the vertical structure of the building. These differences may not be noticeable, but can compromise the stability of the structure in due course. Levelling helps to ensure that the land is on a perfectly horizontal plane before any design is implemented on it. This can be done by levelling the land and determining the elevation.

Levelling Equipments

Levelling Equipments are the tools we use for the purpose of “levelling”. Levelling Equipments come in various types and are used when you are surveying. The levelling equipment is used according to the type of soil and the budget of the construction. The most commonly used levelling instruments are optical levels. If the budget is higher and the project has to be done in a short span of time, then the automatic levelling instruments which use the latest technology, such as the auto level are used to save time and ensure accuracy. If time is not crucial but the budget is slightly on the crunch, then manual levelling instruments are used.
